World Fact #214: Greenland is frozen, and Iceland is not! Iceland is a beautiful Nordic country that boasts volcanoes, waterfalls, glaciers, a blue lagoon and at times…the Northern Lights. The Land of Fire and Ice will take your breath away, just as it did ours when we went exploring black sand beaches, craters and hot springs for five days. We saw the most beautiful flowers and plants, felt the spray of the ocean as we saw puffins and whales, and sipped Brennivin during happy hour (that lasted far more than an hour due to the extended period of sunlight that time of year!).
The waterfalls in Iceland are truly spectacular. Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, while hard to pronounce, are easy on the eyes. The power and beauty of the water will leave you breathless. We also ventured behind Seljalandsfoss, which was a first for the two of us! We spent some quality time in the healing waters of the Blue Lagoon sipping champagne and local beers while having a microalgae mask take years off our faces! The lake is a man-made wonder in the middle of a lava field in the Icelandic wilderness. The water is heated by underground volcanic activity and is pumped to the surface. The mineral rich, geothermal water is said to have healing powers and release a sense of calm to all who enter!
A trip to Iceland is incomplete without a tour of the Golden Circle! You haven’t seen anything like it – why? Because the scenery is ever-changing. You will experience all the beautiful terrains of the island as you see numerous natural wonders. My favorite part was trying to take Zac’s picture in front of the eruptions of Strokkur, one of the most active geysers on the Island… He may or may not have been scalded in the process…
